| Mike West, the founder of the firm, is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and licensed to practice as an attorney in California and Arizona. Mr. West’s practice is limited to Intellectual Property Law, including Patent, Trademark, Copyright, Trade Secret and Unfair Competition Law. Mr. West has over twenty-five (25) years of experience in Intellectual Property Law. Mr. West received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Davis in Electrical Engineering in 1970. He attended law school at the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law, and graduated with distinction in 1978. Mr. West was admitted to the Traynor Society, the law school’s scholastic honor society. During the years of 1977-1978, Mr. West was the Associate Articles Editor for the Pacific Law Journal. Mr. West was admitted to the California State Bar in 1978 and to the Arizona State Bar in 1993. Throughout most of Mr. West’s legal career, he practiced as a principal along with his father Robert G. West and Marcus Lothrop in the intellectual property law firm of Lothrop & West. Mr. West now carries on the traditions established at Lothrop & West in his practice. Mr. West maintains memberships in several IP associations including the American Property Law Association, the International Trademark Law Association, the Intellectual Property Law Sections of the State Bar of California and Arizona State Bar, the San Francisco Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Sacramento Intellectual Property Law Association. Patent. Mr. West has procured patents for clients for a wide variety of inventions, including agricultural sorting and harvesting machines, labeling machines, plastic conveyor belts, neutron and electron irradiation of gemstones, apparatus for inserting and removing contents from envelopes, artificial hearts and medical equipment, automobile testing apparatus, television video processing equipment, and video signal routers. In addition to utility patent, he has obtained numerous design patents. With the assistance of foreign associates, Mr. West has prosecuted foreign patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). Mr. West has also appeared before the United States Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences to secure client’s patent rights. Trademark. Mr. West secures federal and state trademark and service mark registrations, and working with foreign associates secures trademark and service mark rights for clients in foreign countries. Mr. West also provides services for maintaining and renewing federal, state and foreign trademark and service mark registrations. He practices before the United States Trademark Trial and Appeal Board in Opposition, Cancellation and Appeal proceedings. Copyright. Mr. West’s copyright practice encompasses both registration and enforcement of copyrights for a wide variety of subject matter, including textual material, audiovisual works, sound recordings, sculptures and other three-dimensional works, board games and computer programs. Litigation. Mr. West has appeared in federal and state courts to protect client's intellectual property rights and to defend client's in infringement suits.
